Traditional wooden box sash windows

Traditional, wooden box sash windows that are double glazed with a full set of weather seals and a high quality outdoor paint system offer all the same environmental benefits as replacement upvc windows and are just as durable.

There are many companies that offer sash window restoration services. When getting and comparing quotes, you should pay attention to the detail. A rapid, cheap service that adds some weather seals and re-balances windows is not, in my own opinion, a window restoration, rather a short-term fix that can be a false economy.

In my opinion, the two things that really provide longevity in box sash windows are hardwood construction and a high-end paint system. These, combined with a full system of weather seals, double glazed units and proper re-balancing, will produce a draft-free window that retains heat and lasts for many years.

Restoration

My own sash window restoration work always includes:

  • Sash, box and sill being stripped back to wood (as this is the only way to identify the state of the timber and construction)
  • Filling where appropriate using a high quality, two part, resin-based filler
  • Replacement parts where necessary and checking and fixing of all joints
  • A highly resilient, four-coat exterior paint system
  • A complete system of weather seals which are incorporated at the top, bottom, sides and meeting rails of the window
  • Replacement sash cords, pulley wheels and re-balancing

Replacement

In addition, where I replace a sash, box or sill, my work always includes:

  • Hardwood construction using European oak and traditional joinery methods
  • Replication of all existing window detail

 Double glazing

I can double glaze existing sash windows as well as newly constructed ones. This is done using:

  • Pilkington K 18mm aargon-filled double glazed units
